Jim Olson is a ranch-raised cowboy, author, promoter and poet. He grew up on the high plains of eastern New Mexico, where he listed “cowboy” as his first occupation. After several years, he opened a welding business, building horse corrals and other livestock handling equipment in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. Upon selling the welding business he moved into real estate where he sold ranches and horse property across the state of Arizona. Along the way he evolved into real estate development where he bought, fixed up and ran several working cattle ranches and horse property “ranchettes.” He also started a real estate brokerage company, which specialized in Arizona ranch properties. The real estate boom of 2004-05 brought about good times for the Olson household, but the subsequent crash (great recession) just about broke him. Since discovering a love of writing, he sold the real estate company and pursues yet another new career: “I now motivate, entertain, inspire and help people through writing and speaking,” Jim says. He also lives on and operates his own ranch near Stanfield, Arizona - once a part of John Wayne’s Red River Ranch.
Jim always loved rodeo and spent some years competing in the calf roping event at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association level. Rodeo highlights include: competing, and doing well at, the “Grand daddy of them all,” Cheyenne, Wyoming, also the prestigious “Tucson Rodeo,” and his “circuit finals” where he placed against the other top fifteen cowboys of the Southwest. He is now a weekend team roper.
These great life experiences Jim now uses in his writing career. He writes stories about interesting and extraordinary people of the west including short stories of both fiction, nonfiction and cowboy poetry. He writes a monthly column titled “Cowboy Heroes,” published by several Southwestern and national magazines.
